The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The CEFR by Juan José Rodríguez Sibaja

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a document or a guideline that provides a basis for language proficiency qualification. This document classifies learnerns into different levels according to their abilities and achievements. According to Wikipedia, CEFR was put together by the Council of Europe as one part of a projec named ¨Language Learning for European Citizenship¨. The main purpose of the project is to give a way of assessing and teaching which applies to all languages in Europe. In November 2001 the use of CEFR was recommended by European Council Resolution, in order to set up systems of validation of language skills.
Since CEFR is the result of extensive research and work the use of this tool can be very helpful for teachers, testers and even for students. This document can be useful for teachers in order to see how much their students have progressed; and for students this can be very motivating. Besides, the CEFR can be very practical for promoting professional mobility since it is a way to rate our knowledge and communication abilities.
The Common European Framework is a reference that helps learners to know which abilities they have and what they should be able to do at each level. The CEFR should be used by teachers to rate the skills of their students. It is a way to have a notion of the ablities of the students, and this can be very valuable for teachers because they can use the methodology in order to produce a progress in learner´stage. This document is very important because it helps learners of foreign languages to validate their knowledge, also encourage them to pass to the next level.
